Is being transgender a mental illness?

Mental disorder cause significant distress or disability. Many transgender people do not experience their gender as distressing or disabling, whereas many others suffer from sever depression. What are your thoughts?

No, I don't think so. An illness would suggest that it's something that needs to be treated or cured, which doesn't seem necessary.

I wouldn't categorize it as an illness, mental or otherwise. That said I do agree that sexual orientation can be determined my a multitude of factors, including environmental (i.e. mental, emotional, physical abuse, etc.) and physiological. Regarding the latter, you hear plenty of stories where non heterosexual people talk about how they never felt "comfortable" about their gender at very young ages or their parents always knew they had opposite sex personality traits, i.e. they were born that way.
