Star Wars: The Last Jedi

That seemingly unimportant side story featuring Finn and Rose. Brand new force powers for Leia. That awesome fight scene where Kylo and Rey briefly united; and of course, the mood of Luke Skywalker. What did everyone like and dislike about the new Star Wars?

This is multi generational marketing genius. Whether it was good or bad, it made me take my 12 year old son and carry on a tradition 40+ years in the making. I saw it at Gold class and every seat was taken by a 40+ aged male or female with at least one of their children accompanying them. I loved the story because it passed on a tradition I love, which is star wars. All I could think was these guys are masters at bringing generations together and continuing to make more money off them. It could have been the worst film on the planet and I'd see it to keep the tradition alive. Brilliant work (& I loved the film).

Star Wars should have ended at episode VI (Return of the Jedi). The whole thing has become such a huge monolithic cultural icon that it has no where to go. People are SO wedded to the idea of storm troopers, tie fighters, lightsabers etc that pretty much every film has to include all of these elements otherwise the fans won't go for it. The fan service is necessarily more important than telling a compelling and new story. When they try to do something new, like in The Last Jedi, it's a clusterfuck - and worst of all, it was boring. In terms of tone, this was a huge departure from Force Awakens, so as a 'trilogy' there's going to be little flow. It would be like if George RR Martin wrote the first book in GoT and then guest authors came in to write the following books... and they didn't even consult each other on what the over-arching story/narrative is going to be. Force Awakens made me like Star Wars again, Last Jedi made me feel indifferent for the whole franchise. And bored. Very bored. I have no

PT2 - desire to see the Solo film, but undoubtedly will out of morbid curiosity. Sometimes less is more and that should definitely be the case with Star Wars. In the Star Wars universe there is nothing new under the sun - you only have the force, lightsabers, the jedi, the empire, tie fighters, the millenium falcon and a seemingly endless war that never even gets close to resolution. Without all of the cultural icons inserted into the film with a liberal slathering of movie call-backs to moments from the original films, would any film even qualify as a Star Wars film? I don't think so. It's just too big. Everyone knows what to expect already, and they simply turn up to see the same elements re-hashed and re-packaged. BUT, release a 'Star Wars' film and you are guaranteed to sell a LOT of lunchboxes... and after all, isn't that what film making is REALLY all about? ;)
