Should the date of Australia Day be changed?

In connection with a previous contendr that can be found at https://contendr.io/topic/46/greens-vow-to-change-the-date-of-australia-day

we're asking if Australia day should be changed! If so, why? If not, why not?

If you argue 'For', then you're saying it should be changed | If you're arguing against then you're saying it should remain the same.

If people vote on this and the majority of people want to change it, then we should change it!

I thought about this when it came up recently and no, I don't think the date needs to be changed. The date chosen is a fairly obvious choice, however this doesn't tell you what 'you' as an Australian citizen need to feel about it. For some people it's a celebration of the birth of a nation - and that's perfectly valid. For some people it's a painful memory of atrocities comitted - and that's perfectly valid too. History should be remembered for both the good and bad things that happened. It's important to acknowledge the pain, but it's also important to acknowledge that great things emerge on the timeline of history - and Australia as a modern nation is one of the success stories. Both 'narratives' are true. And we should be wary of people who seek to impose their singular narrative onto everyone else. For me, history is interesting and fascinating BECAUSE we no longer live that way anymore. We no longer accept colonialist leanings, or temptations towards maximum punishment for minor crimes. Societ

PT2... Society has gotten better. We have gotten better. And that is worth noticing and celebrating. It's a modern day tragedy when people fail or refuse to notice this.

No - I don't think we should change the data for Australia day. What will we change next? Father's day to special person's day? People should just enjoy the long weekend with their fellow Aussies.
