Innocent Gaffe or Offensive Racist Mistake?

On an official visit to China, the UK's foreign secretary mistakenly called his Chinese wife Japanese while speaking with the Chinese foreign minister. He quickly corrected himself but now the headlines are reading very poorly of the mixup. So, was this an innocent gaffe or an offensive racist mistake worthy of such an article by the BBC: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-45004765

Innocent gaffe. If he was 'racist' he probably wouldn't have corrected himself because we couldn't care.
